About BTEBlue Turtle Engineering, LLC was founded by President and CEO, Lee Frey. With over a decade of experience in the development and operation of underwater systems, Lee saw the need for a small, nimble, company that could offer ocean engineering expertise to the marine science and underwater exploration communities, without the cumbersome bureaucracy and high overhead costs that afflict many large institutions.
In 2010, Lee met Don Schofield, Founder and Director of the Australian Oceanographic Foundation, a new non-profit group with a challenging mission … to fill the growing demand from the marine science community for access to advanced underwater technology, in the face of dwindling government support. At a time when it was more crucial than ever to explore and understand human impacts on our oceans, and when budget outlooks appeared bleakest, AOF was leaping headlong into the problem, committed to finding “out-of-the-box” ways to fund this vital work.
In 2011, inspired by the obvious common vision between AOF and BTE, Lee left his appointment as Senior Engineer and Project Manager at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, to pursue a partnership with AOF, and work at Blue Turtle full-time. Today, BTE has secured partnerships and contracts with foundations like AOF, as well as various universities and private-sector companies.
From manned and unmanned underwater vehicles, to advanced instrumentation and sensor systems, to offshore operations and project management, BTE is doing its small part to provide the engineering support that the deep sea scientific community so desperately needs.
At BTE, “think deep” is more than our motto, it’s our mission.
